The quite anticipated Christmas time has finally come and Berlin has once again transformed into a fairytale that takes your breath away. There are Christmas markets all over town, some bigger than others. Every year, from the moment they begin the city is filled with people visiting each one and enjoying the holiday spirit.

1. Christmas Market in Alexanderplatz

Location: U Alexanderplatz

There is nothing better than going to the heart of the city and spend some time in this Christmas Market. Definitely one of the busiest markets in Berlin. What makes it special is that it is in the centre of Berlin, giving you many choices regarding sights, food, shopping. Get on the second or third floor of Saturn for a view of the whole market. On Christmas Eve, the market will be open from 10:00 – 14:00.

2. Winterworld at Postdamer Platz

Location: S Postdamer Platz Bahnhof

What to do: Go skating, buy textile products, buy all kinds of crafts and sweets

Truly a beautiful market on a very busy street in Berlin. Even though the market might seem small at first, it is not. If you start walking, you will find out that is way bigger, going all the way to Arkaden mall and Sony Center. Everything is decorated, even the trees on the street. The malls are beautifully decorated. On Christmas Eve, the market will be open from 10:00 until 14.00.

The Arkaden is a mall with stunning golden decorations and a huge Christmas tree with ornaments of different Berlin sights. As for the Sony Center, it transforms into a cosy magical place, which makes it ideal for children. Every hour, there is a dance show performance for 20 minutes for everyone to enjoy.

3. Weihnachtszauber at Gendarmenmarkt

What to do: Try high-class dishes, see performances from renowned artists, find all the unique merchandisers, find the origami master

By far the most popular Christmas market in Berlin. It is surrounded by grand and amazing landmarks and it gives its visitors a feeling of warmth and elegance. There are so many unique merchandisers around the market, that specialize in a variety of crafts, such as an ivory carver, an embroiderer and a milliner among others, who provide high-quality goods. There is also an origami master, who you must definitely visit since his work is amazing.

Looking for something to eat? What better than a Michelin-star chef? What about more than one Michelin-star chef? They prepare gourmet dishes for everyone and I recommend you try at least a dish from them. On Christmas Eve, the market will be open from 11:00 to 18:00 and in New Year´s Eve from 11:00 to 13:00.

4. Christmas Market at Gedächtniskirche in Kurfürstendamm

What to do: Buy Christmas ornaments, buy winter clothes, eat caramelized nuts and homemade eggnog

Located between Kurfürstendamm and the Zoologischer Garten, this market is simply beautiful and so inviting. There are carousels for all children to have fun and all sorts of sausages for grownups. Walking outside the market, you will see some amazing decorations all around. On Christmas Eve the market will be open from 11:00 to 14:00, and on New Year´s Eve from 11:00 to 13:00. On 25th, 26th of December, as well as on the 1st of January the market will be open from 13:00 to 21:00.

Walking along the street, after the Christmas market you can get amazed by the stunning decorations all around. The streets are bright with lights and decorations, and the famous lit ´Berlin´ letter sign. Towards the end of the street, KaDeWe, one of the biggest and most expensive malls in Berlin, waits for you with some incredible decor. Each year, KaDeWe impresses with its unique moving window displays.

5. Christmas Market at Charlottenburg Palace

What to do: Eat freshly baked bread and savoury snacks, get on the rollercoaster, have some spritz biscuits and marzipan loaves

This Christmas market takes Christmas on to another level, by being positioned in front of the beautiful Charlottenburg Palace. The location might not be very central, but the market is so pretty and festive that many visit it on a daily basis. On Christmas Eve, the market will be closed, but on the 25th and 26th of December, the opening times are from 12:00 to 20:00.

6. Christmas Market at Spandau

Location: U Altstadt Spandau and S+U Rathaus Spandau
When: 25 November – 22 December 2019
Opening Times: Sun – Thur 11:00 – 20:00 / Fri – Sat 11:00 – 22:00

What to do: Go shopping, sing along with Santa, check the various performances

One of the biggest Christmas markets in Berlin and a very impressive one. Since it is located in the middle of the Spandau shopping street, you get to combine shopping while making stops for baked goods or ornaments in the market. You can easily spend many hours in the market, as during the day there are many performances by artists and a special treat for children when they get to sing with Santa and ask him for presents.

7. Steglitzer Weihnachtsmarkt

Location: U Walther-Schreiben Platz
When: 25 November – 04 January 2020
Opening Times: Daily 10:30 – 20:30
Entrance: Free
What to do: Eat Kurtoscalacs, visit Boulevard Berlin, go shopping

Even though it is the smallest Christmas market on the list, it is a great option if you also want to combine with it your Christmas shopping. The area is a very busy shopping area with 3 big malls one right after the other. Boulevard Berlin is exceptional this year, with thousands of Christmas lights on display and very impressive ornament decorations. On the 24th of December, the market will be open from 11:00 to 18:00, while on the 25th and 26th will operate from 12:00 to 20:00.

8. Winter Magic at Nikolaiviertel

Location: Nikolaiviertel
When: 15 November – 05 January 2020
Opening Times: Mon – Fri 12:00 – 22:30 / Sat & Sun 10:00 – 22:30

What to do: watch a movie, drink a cup of Feuerzangenbowle, play curling

Nikolaiviertel is a charming fairytale-like area in Berlin that is perfect to visit all year long. This year, it joins the holiday festivities with a cosy and lovely Christmas market, with wooden huts and lights. Every day at 14:30, 17:00 and 19:30,  you can watch a film classic with Heinz Rühmann while sitting on some pretty comfy sofas. During these times you can get a cup of Feuerzangenbowle for free, an alcoholic hot drink with rum and sugarloaves dripped in mulled wine. Also, join in some curling action, a sport that is might be quite famous but it sure is fun.


Of course, Berlin has a Christmas market in every single neighbourhood. Some quite big and some much smaller. But, no matter where you are, you cannot miss one and stop for a quick Glühwein or even try the German sausages.
