Santorini is one of the most beautiful islands in Greece and among the most popular ones around the world. When visiting the island, you must be aware of some essential things that will help you be more prepared and know what to expect.
1.Rent a car or an ATV
From one side of the island to the other, you need a maximum of 1 hour by car. You definitely need a mean of transportation, since it is truly worth it to go around and explore the whole island. There are also local buses that depart every half an hour.
However, if you choose to rent a car or ATV, you can check the island on your own pace and make as many stops as you want. Just a simple Google search, will get you the best car services, which are really affordable.
2. 3 days are enough
Many are so eager to see everything and afraid that will not make it if they only visit the island for less than a week. But that is not true. The island is not that big since you need about 2 hours to go from one end to the other.
We recommend you visit Santorini for 3 or 4 days, which is enough to see the whole island and enjoy it without rushing. For those that only have a weekend free to visit, make sure to visit Oia and go around only if you have the time. Since Oia´s hotels are a bit expensive, you can always choose to stay at Fira, which is the closest city to Oia, with way cheaper accommodation.
3. Enjoy the fresh fish
Greeks are known for their excellent, tasty and high-quality food, whether is vegetables, traditional dishes, fast food, and fish. Santorini is known to have some of the freshest and tasty fish in Greece. There are taverns or restaurants in every corner in Santorini, and ALL of them serve fish dishes. Do not miss other traditional foods, such as fava, santorinia salad, and kapari.
4. A bit overpriced
Compared to Europe, the prices in Santorini are pretty much the same. But comparing them to Greece, they are a bit much. For example, Budapest, Prague, and Berlin are way cheaper compared to Santorini, while Paris and Copenhagen are not. However, you get what you pay for.
It is totally up to you whether you want a simple apartment or a luxury hotel, gyros or a gourmet restaurant. The one thing for sure is that the food quality is outstanding and so is the view no matter where you go, and in any type of accommodation you will find out what Greek hospitality means.
5. Hike to go swimming
Santorini has iconic views and areas for you to visit. The island is not so popular for its beaches since they are nothing special. Some of the most beautiful beaches on the island require some hiking, such as the Red Beach and the White Beach is only accessible by boat. So get prepared with hats, water, and sneakers.
